On March 4, members of the City Council voted to continue work on the Barney Allis Redevelopment Project by passing Ordinance 201080. This ordinance authorizes the Design-Build contract with McCownGordon Construction for pre-construction services, and allows the project team to work on an initial schematic design, determine a guaranteed maximum price, prepare a definitive finance plan, and evaluate commercial real estate alternatives.

This Ordinance is subject to the City and Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) entering into an agreement where KCATA would generously agreed to fund this next phase of work. Years ago, the KCATA had identified the bus stop located at 11th and 12th Streets as a major transit hub, because of its location on the main east/west line through downtown and on the Prospect Max route. Moving forward together, the project team will work in conjunction with the KCATA and City to weave in plans to renovate and improve the transit facilities as a layover/rest area for transit operators. Once the City provides a notice to proceed to the Barney Allis project team, work under this Ordinance is anticipated to take between three to four months.

The project team is appreciative of everyone who has participated in the process, and made their voice heard by submitting a letter or testifying at a City Council meeting. Community engagement and support have been the driving force behind this project despite a number of challenges. Forging ahead together, our sight remains focused on the future as we build a better Barney Allis Plaza and Garage for Kansas City.
