Future Vision

Barney Allis Plaza

A central gathering place at the heart of Kansas City’s convention district, Barney Allis Plaza will boast a roster of spaces intended to host standalone events and add-ons for groups gathering at the Kansas City Convention Center and other nearby venues. It will have multiple components for daily use, as well as regularly scheduled active programming throughout the year.

Individual areas designed for events and activations include:

  • An event plaza, a paved space on the south end of Barney Allis Plaza (just outside Municipal Auditorium and the Kansas City Convention Center) for large events, pop-up festivals and more.
  • A sloped lawn, boasting terraces and views onto the event plaza.
  • A pavilion plaza, intended to host food trucks and other pop-up events, as well as a variety of artwork throughout the space.
  • An oval lawn, offering a flat and flexible green space for casual events and informal gatherings.

The future vision of the plaza and parking garage looks bright! At the end of construction, people can enjoy a thriving, arts-focused greenspace and street-level urban park, a new parking garage with capacity for approximately 580 vehicles, and updgraded infrastructure surrounding the perimeter of the site.

Auditorium Plaza Garage

The Auditorium Parking Garage located underneath Barney Allis Plaza was closed on Monday, April 15, 2024. Over half of its original parking spaces were unusable due to deteriorating conditions, and approximately 475 were in use. Upon closure, an environmental abatement process was conpleted to prepare for demolition. The redeveloped garage will have capacity for approximately 580 vehicles.

Downtown Kansas City offers around 40,000 parking spaces. While the Auditorium Garage is closed there are many other nearby or alternative options for visitors to utilize with many options to reserve parking ahead of time. The Auditorium Garage parking makes up less than 4% of overall available parking with a 5-7 minute walk.

Visitors and patrons looking for alternative parking can find many options on the Parking Info webpage
