Crews completed the final plaza deck concrete pour on June 10.
Two years after breaking ground, the Barney Allis Plaza construction project hit its most significant milestone to date with the completion of the 14th and final plaza deck concrete pour on Tuesday, June 10.
Each pour requires dozens of workers, each doing a very customized job with precision, sometimes under very expedited circumstances. During the last pour, for example, storms were in the area requiring a tight time frame and a brief work stoppage when lightning was detected in the area.
With the concrete poured, work on the deck will continue to progress rapidly. Keep your eyes open for the following work on the plaza:
- Structural steel forming the structure of the the pavilion on the northwest side.
- Foundations being set for playground area.
- Walls taking shape for the oval lawn on the northeast side.
Eventually geofoam will go on top of the concrete, bringing the foundation layer up to street grade and prepping the site for landscaping.
Underneath the plaza deck, work continues on all systems required for a functional building.

Art mock-up sneak peek
Project team members, city officials, including Councilmembers Crispin Rea and Eric Bunch, and City Manager Mario Vasquez, recently got to see a mock-up of the art piece, which is being fabricated here in Kansas City.
As the plaza deck moves closer to completion, work is also underway on the public art piece for the project. The public artwork, named Kansas City Spirit: Memory of Resilience, is the largest public artwork commission in Kansas City’s history. Designed by Belgian art duo Gijs Van Varenbergh, this open steel framework was inspired by the façade of the original Kansas City Convention Hall, which opened in 1899 and burned down less than a year later.
