As of late November 2020, the selection process to solicit a design and construction team to provide Design-Build (D-B) services for the Barney Allis Redevelopment project is complete. Ordinance No. 201080 authorizes the execution of the D-B contract for preconstruction services and continues the project team’s work related to the garage and plaza.

The City of Kansas City, Missouri has elected to negotiate with McCownGordon Construction who has been awarded the contract. The contract is subject to final negotiations and approval from City Council.

Ordinance No.201080 will be up for discussion and a vote by the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Operations Committee of the City Council.

Why is this Important Now?

  • Kansas City Pride. Community continues to be the heart of this project. Barney Allis Plaza is in the heart of downtown and can be a shining example of City pride for upcoming national and international events.
  • Timing is everything. Take advantage of COVID-19 and reconstruct during a period of low demand, loss of tourism. Minimize disruptions as the hotel and convention industry recovers from the pandemic.
  • Resiliency during recovery. The City can create 200-300 construction jobs and stimulate the local economy, while also preparing for potential federal funding opportunities for shovel-ready projects.
