You’ve followed along as construction pieces like tie-backs, shoring and tension cabling have built the foundation underground. Now the vision for Barney Allis Plaza is coming into such clear view, the plaza deck elements are clearly identifiable from aerial drone photos.

Check out the above side-by-side images, featuring recent drone of the plaza on the left, and plaza elements from original renderings overlaid on the image to the right.

  • From the top left, the pavilion roofing and exterior sheathing are nearing completion, along with the roughed-in future food and beverage area. Just adjacent to the pavilion, crews are installing fill material around the future playground (noted by the white oval-like spot under the crane on the left image or the purple and blue circular spot on the right).
  • On the top right, the granite installation has been completed on the oval lawn, and preparations are underway for installation of pavers along the pathways in north half of the site.
  • The dog park at middle right is also prepared for fill material. And from the middle of the side south, drainage mats, granite pieces, precast benches and finish pieces are about to be installed throughout.
  • At the left and right, you can see the traffic ramps and stairs for entering the garage, which are finishing up with roofing over the stairs, waterproofing at the ramps, and snow melt systems.

Keep following along for more up-to-date looks as we move toward completion!

American Society of Civil Engineering student days teams visit Barney Allis Plaza

Students visit Barney Allis in July 2026

Barney Allis Plaza was the focus of the 2026 American Society of Civil Engineering Construction Institute’s Student Days Team Challenge Project the weekend of July 31-August 2. The Student Days Team Challenge brings the top engineering students from across the country to learn about a real world-construction project, develop a written and oral proposal that takes all conditions into account, including local laws and regulations, as well as minimized impact to traffic, surrounding residential/commercial areas, and shareholders.

The project involves multiple disciplines, including civil, foundations, concrete, and steel erection. Participants in the competition create a bid package that includes a cost estimate and a project schedule for a “real-world” construction project and present their proposal to construction industry professionals. This year’s students were tasked with designing the Barney Allis Plaza deck. Student teams developed comprehensive construction bid proposals, handling scheduling, logistics, stakeholder coordination, and cost estimates for the actual Barney Allis Plaza renovation. Ryne Hoskins, construction superintendent for the project from the McCownGordon construction team, participated as a judge for the event.
